Just wondering, how long does a copy right last? Fireball XL5 is OLD! Stuff like Ozzy and Harriet, Amos and Andy are so old that hardly anyone even knows that these old TV shows exist anymore. To tell you the truth TV is getting so bad I long for the shows I saw as a kid! I used to watch Sky King, Supercar, Captain Satellite, Fireball XL5, Ozzy & Harriet, Amos & Andy, Three Stooges, Commander Cody, Leave it to Beaver, Gun Smoke, you see where I'm going! I'm really thinking of turning my Satellite TV off as there is literally nothing good and uplifting to watch. A good example the TV show called "Lost In Space" The Robinson's were a pretty tight family. The Husband and Wife actually loved one another and the kids respected their parents. Yes the show was goofy and campy but its fun! Ever seen the new Lost In Space movie? That family was so messed up I felt like who cares what happens to them! If they smack into a big rock it wouldn't be a great loss. Even the new BattleStar Galactica is so messed up that if the Galactican's came to my solar system I would chase them away from my planet. The Galatican's are so dysfunctional as a people and a society I wouldn't want them any where near my planet. They really need to fun the old 1950's shows again! They might even improve our society just a little :)

Copyrights can last upto 95 years, Due to both America's and Australia's crappy governments. Good news is that a lot of stuff has entered the public domain as it's copyrights were not renewed. This includes most of "Ozzie and Harriet", around 70 episodes of "You Bet Your Life", 29 or 30 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and basically everything produced by The DuMont Television Network. I was born in 1990, But I still prefer 50's/60's stuff to today's TV (In fact I only watch one current TV show, which is a game show that started in the 80's). Hell, even "My Mother The Car" is better than most of today's stuff! (However, All 30 episodes of "My Mother The Car" are still copyrighted and cannot be uploaded here). As a rule, "Kinescoped" programs are almost certainly public domain, But Filmed shows, even one-season-wonders, are often still copyrighted. If you need to know the copyright status of any old TV shows, Just ask me.

"My Mother The Car" kind of like the Automotive version of
"Mr Ed!" "My Mother The Car" was funny but strange show to be sure. What was nice about these shows were they weren't overly political and there was no sure think as political correctness. Most the these shows had no real plot line and weren't trying to change the world. They were just pure entertainment. "The Honey Mooners, Red Skelton, Jacky Gleeson" were all really good and I'm lucky to have experienced them first hand. I was watching the Ed Sullivan show when they introduced the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, the Rolling Stones and even a little girl name Barbra! As a matter of fact TV is what got me into electronics. I didn't need no stinkin tube tester! I could look at a TV set and tell you which tube was messed up. I MISS vacuum tubes! I wish technology had stopped in 1965! Oh I went on to fix computers and stuff but computers are not nearly as fun to fix as the old gear was.

Oh Kinescope! I remember that! If I remember correctly they had a master monitor in a box. Also in the box they had a film camera. The film camera was set up in such away and to keep sync with the TV monitors screen and to you could film a live TV show without having both video and film cameras set up. I remember some of those old video systems were plagued with persistence problems and the video output didn't look so hot. Any source of light viewed by the camera would just blow the image away. So if a person lit a match you would literally loose the picture. A fast movement of your hand would leave a streak across the screen.

I remember the first TV I looked at, it was a 1958 B & W Westing House. I used to take the back off the unit and watch the tubes. Either the tubes were really big or I was very small. What I do remember was there was allot of tubes and they put out lots of heat. It must of taken a great deal of power to run that CRT because the power tubes were in parallel in order two share the load. It was difficult generating the high voltages needed to energize a CRT in those days. I think they needed at least 24Kva to fire up.

Speaking of which, It's disgusting what happened to The DuMont Network archive. The wife of Ernie Kovacs says that in the mid-70's the entire archive was dumped into Upper new York Bay. Still, Around 400 DuMont Kinescopes exist, and I've uploaded a couple including one episode of "Captain Video", one episode of "The Morey Amsterdam Show" and 3 episodes of "Rocky King, Detective".

Did you watch "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" back in the 60's? NBC erased most of the 60's-era episodes, including on with John Lennon and Paul Macartney!

If you see DVDs of TV shows that cost less than $10, That usally means it's Public Domain. A company called Alpha Video has released rare old public domain TV shows like "What's My Line", "Dusty's Trail" and "Beulah".

Speaking of "My Mother The Car I saw a few episodes on cable repeats and I liked it! Much better than "All In The Family" and stuff like that. I wish it was on DVD.

About 95% of 50's TV is PD but at least 95% of 50's TV no longer exists.

They dumped the entire archive? Well maybe the film went bad! I've heard that film used to be made from acidtate I think they called it and over time this stuff would just go away. If not I wonder why they would just dump American history in the river. As a side note I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be many WC Fields or May West films around. There was also a movie called "From the Earth to the Moon" I haven't seen in ages. This film was in color and they were not shot out of a cannon. In this film the space craft was painted with an anti-gravity paint. This space craft landed hard and used railroad car bumpers for shock absorption.

I often wonder why TVland never plays stuff like Ozzie and Harriet, Donna Reed, Lassie and other like TV shows! The do run gun smoke but they only run a very few of them over and over again.

Maybe someone doesn't want us to know how good the 50's really were. As a kid in the 50's I could do anything, go anywhere and I live in Long Island New York. No one ever messed with me or tried to molest me and I was really little at the time. I even walked to school! This doesn't mean that the other school children weren't little terrorist, some of them were spoiled brats but then there are always a few of those!

According to the wife of Ernie Kovacs, Nobody wanted to preserve DuMont's archive after they went out of business, since they were seen as having little commercial value. It's well known that ABC, CBS, and NBC destroyed many of their live programs until 1978 when cable meant that even a short-lived game show could be re-run. In DuMont's case, It's believed that ABC had bought the rights to the company, and destroyed the Kinescopes to make way for newer stuff. Curiously enough, Every episode of the shows you mentioned still exist, Since "Filmed" TV shows could be re-run.

I watched Morey Amsterdam Show! Very interesting in that it was very much along the lines of a Vaudeville show. It was interesting to see. What is also interesting is the optics. If you look closely you can see the borders of the lens assembly.

Oh, I found some good GunSmoke radio shows! I just love GunSmoke and they have a large collection of them.

The Current Gunsmokes and X minus 1 are ones I uploaded at the start the OTR group. OTRR has both of these series coming in Higher bitrate encodes. I "think" both are finished and will make it here in time. OTRR had a gunsmoke set here briefly but there were problems with the set and it was pulled. There is nothing wrong with my uploads of those series though, I just wanted to alert you that Higher bitrates are on the way.
