Contemplative Tones |
Typically I am in the mood for some rip roaring jamming. Today I need something different, something contemplative. What are your go to shows that are a catalyst to taking a hike with your hounds and going introspective?

contemplative moods usually bring out the non-Dead
maybe some James Todd...
http://tinyurl.com/3vvut2dthen again, it might call for some good scotch and listening to Johnny Mathis radio on Pandora

Infrared Roses :-)
not exactly a show, but it sure can make my mind wander and make me feel more introspective

Mason and I are embarking on such a jaunt now. We are going with 9/20/70 and 6/24/70...

Re: Contemplative Tones |
Hey Cliff, what's your favorite show of the EU72 box shows? I followed your EU72 posts a while ago but am too lazy to go back and review all of them to find your favorite. Got a road trip tomorrow down to Eugene to see Furthur and need a recommendation for our listening pleasure.

Re: Contemplative Tones |
After listening to a great deal of the boxed set my favorite show of the entire tour remains 5/3/72 in Paris. That said, disk 3 from Rotterdam (5/11/72) is just mind blowing! Phil's play is extraordinary! It might be the greatest disk of music that the Grateful Dead have ever released...

Re: Contemplative Tones |
Thanks, just going to the first night. I think it's the first night of the West Coast Tour.
Just got laid off and assigned to a new job all in the same day. Fvk, it's been a tough one today.

Thanks, our family goes to Veneta every year for the Oregon Country Fair. Wish I was at the 72 show but a bit too young to be in attendance.

Re: Contemplative Tones |
I hope you're going on a really long walk. Breaking up shows into pieces/skipping around is a GD sin for me - it ruins a show's character.

Re: Contemplative Tones |
Good choices, they are part of your favorite accoustic shows, correct? While waiting around for your response I re-read a LIA post and came to the conclusion that 4.28.71 was the right pick for me and the hounds: Tully & Leila. Enjoy your hike.

Re: Contemplative Tones |
You could try the Playin' > Wheel > Playin' from 6/29/76. From the end of the first vocal section to the beginning of the vocal reprise - including The Wheel and it's 10 minute outro - has worked for me.

Good call. 76 is always a welcome listen. That laid back feeling is exactly what the doctor ordered. And that's the one they played Samson & Delilah, right. ;-)

Re: Contemplative Tones |
Yep, Samson & Deliliah opening a great second set. For chilled out tunes the Peggy-O, Mission In The Rain, and yes, Looks Like Rain are all quite beautiful in the first set. The downtempo Candyman and St. Stephen are also quite nice - actually, the whole show is pretty great if you like that warm, summery, laid back sound of that tour.

We also tapped into 7/17/76, Comes a Time, which did the trick. Unfortunately Mason ended up chasing some wildlife and came up pretty lame. Looks like a vet visit tomorrow. Hope you had a nice walk...
